On a whim, while about to return from my friend’s real estate office downtown, I decided to stop by West 4th Street and watch a movie. Being in a real estate office had put the idea of new beginnings into my head, and so when I read the summary for “The Big Picture,” I knew I had to watch it.
“The Big Picture” is a French film about Paul Exben, a photographer-gone-lawyer who gave up his passion for money. His wife, tired of the drab, business-like manner he has adopted, cheats on him with an amateur photographer down the block. Through a sequence of events, Paul is forced to flee town and start a new life with a new identity in another country. While there, he picks up photography again and tries to start over.
This reminded me of an exhibit I visited when I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art just the other week. I went through the Egyptian art section and spent much time viewing the artifacts with which the Ancient Egyptians buried their dead. They believed that these items would be accessible to the deceased in their next life.
I would like to make this blog about new beginnings. As someone who has lived in three places, attended six schools, and came out both as gay and as an atheist, I have had many life-changing pivotal points in my short eighteen years. Many of these transitions have felt like literally transforming into a new person– starting a new life. However, at each step, I have had tools and skills from my “previous life” pave the way for my new roots. It is this topic that I would like to use this eportfolio to explore.
