Nuyorican Poet’s Cafe
The Nuyorican Poet’s Café presents ground-breaking works of literature, music, theater, performance art, poetry slam, hip-hop, visual art presented by established champions as well as rising artists from every background imaginable. The modestly small café attracts hundreds of people, and if you happen to be one of the first on line, you’ll be lucky to grab a seat on a chair, balcony, shelf or floor. Inexpensively priced, this is an ideal form of entertainment to not only meet people and dance a jig courtesy of Jivepoetic, the café’s DJ, but also to immerse one’s self in the spoken word.
Don’t be surprised if you find yourself relating to the personal matters expressed by the performers because they do discuss their own personal experiences. You will also be proud to note that a few of the performers are Brooklyn College students such as Mega and Catherine, who do a phenomenal job of articulating rather difficult subjects. It’s definitely a place where one can be educated about life and, if you are old enough, grab a drink at the bar.
