Chinatown, Manhattan is one of the oldest communities that is home to the largest group of Chinese people in the Western hemisphere. It is two miles long bounded by Grand Street on the north, Henry and Leonard Street on the south, Broadway on the west and Essex Street on the east. However, these are only its physical barriers as the influence of Chinatown extends much further than its geographical boundaries. Though Chinatown is a popular place for Chinese immigrants, it is also the home for many other ethnic groups such as the Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, Burmese, Vietnamese and Filipinos. Chinatown is most famous for their restaurants and food markets. In the recent years, Chinatown has experienced an increase in gentrification where affluent—usually white residents, replace lower-class individuals—usually minorities.
