Stuyvesant Town is named after Peter Stuyvesant who had a farm on the site in the 17th Century. Peter Cooper Village is also named after Peter Cooper who was a 19th Century inventor who founded Cooper Union. The area was also known as the Gas House District.

The area of this presently charming environment was once unpleasant, filled with leaking gas tanks and gangs…known as the Gas House District. At the end of World War II, the area was developed into housing by the Met Life company for returning soldiers. However, in order to construct the community, thousands of families had to be displaced; as well as churches, schools, and hundreds of stores. Nevertheless, the vision of picturesque living and the need for the housing space triumphed when in 1947 the first veteran families moved in. Control of the property has shifted throughout time to Tishman Speyer and then CW Capital.” – Katrina Duran
