Relatively modest, but a sign of changing demographics, the Islamic Center of Brighton Beach is one of three mosques in the area. Also known as Masjid Omar, or literally “Mosque of Omar”, the site is structured more like a center than a grand mosque, and was erected within the last decade. It is located within Pakistani Brighton, a sub-community within Brighton Beach, and a haven for a growing Pakistani Sunni population. While there is no website or representative for the mosque, it can be said that we are dealing with a sign of things to come. Muslims in Brighton tend to settle around Neptune Avenue, and have subsequently opened up successful delis, grocery stores, and even a barbershop. Within twenty to thirty years the Russian Jewish—or WWII generation—will have lost its dominant status as a majority in Brighton Beach. Among those looking to assume a stronger presence are Pakistani Muslims, and we foresee their small sub-community expanding very soon.
