Schnorrer, Schlemiel and Shlamazel

These are figures typically used in Jewish jokes.

The schnorrer is a high class beggar who is normally pitted against a Rothschild-millionaire type. He utilizes his cunning in order to ask for things frequently without having to give anything in return. He resembles a freeloader.

The schlemiel plays the role of a fool. He is the eternal innocent who always manages to get himself into trouble.

The shlamazel plays the straight man to the schlemiel and is often the unlucky person who suffers from the schlemiel’s lack of wit.
