Venus X was born and raised in the Washington Heights neighborhood of New York City. Her parents emigrated from the Dominican Republic and Ecuador, which has had a strong influence on her both personally and professionally. This influence can be seen in her unique music, which draws on a wide range of sources, both from her ethnic heritage and her own urban experiences.
Venus X embodies in a bold way the direction in which second generation residents of mixed neighborhoods such as Washington Heights are headed. Her music cannot be claimed for the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, or even New York City. She mixes genres such as Chicago juke, Dominican dembow, African house music, Spanish salsa, Turkish techno, along with local underground rap tracks (Hawgood, 2012) to create a style that is both very much her own and wholly universal.
