Religion as a devotion to a particular faith is an important identity marker for new immigrants that come to the United States. It fosters a sense of belonging and community that may be hard for many immigrants to find as they go through a plethora of change while adapting to a foreign environment. Faith may not be home, but it is a vital continuity for many immigrants who long for their country of origin. In essence it is a lasting piece from their homeland that can always make them feel connected to what is going on back home.
Nearly half of Jackson Heights residents classify themselves as being religious and the variety of different faiths, creeds, and beliefs mirrors the tremendous ethnic diversity of the area. With that being said, the three most prominent faiths found in the area are Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, with smaller percentages following Hinduism and various denominations of Protestantism.
