Bensonhurst

Through our investigation of the ethnic populations of Bensonhurst, we discovered that their relationships with one another are those of tolerance, but not necessarily of cooperation or friendship. The primarily Chinese and Soviet Jewish, but also Italian groups are relatively self segregating, with the populations generally sticking to their own kind. They may use the same subway stops, live side by side, and go to the same religious institutions; yet they wake up at different times to hear mass in different languages. Nevertheless, Brooklyn’s Bensonhurst maintains a unique multicultural identity that is, in many ways, telling of the evolving history of immigrants in New York City as a whole.
