Religious Institutions

In all of the neighborhoods studied, the theme of cooperation and civility was observed. Bensonhurst, Jackson Heights, Flushing and Chinatown all have a diverse group of people. For example, in Jackson Heights, the majority of the population is either Muslim or Catholic, but both communities cooperate within the neighborhood. Similarly, in Flushing, the Chinese ethnic group is the most predominant, but the neighborhood is rich in diversity, with Hindu temples and Muslim mosques on the same block. Although one group of people is more predominant than others in each neighborhood, that group’s religion invites the entire community to enter their institutions and use their facilities and programs. Through cooperation and civility, these neighborhoods thrive in many aspects.
