Hello!  Welcome!  This page conveys research on the Dominican community of Staten Island.  We have included a brief history of this ethnic community.  In addition, Dominicans are an important part of Staten Island and express their ethnic identity through restaurants, churches, and other locations of interest.

The Dominican Republic is the second most populous Caribbean nation located on the Island of Hispanola.  It is home to more than 10 million people.  The area, which was inhabited by the Taino people, was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492.  He founded Santo Domingo, the capital.  Since that point, the Dominican Republic has been a center of Hispanic culture.  Centuries later, Dominicans brought their heritage with them when they began to immigrate to the United States and settle in New York.
