Blurb 4

The 30-minute long mini-musicals gave the four participating campuses a choice between writing an original dramatic or a comedic musical. Brooklyn College’s piece was internet-themed with two teenagers who have been sucked into cyberspace, Mark Zuckerberg as the antagonist and YouTube, Hulu, Twitter and “LOLCAT” as supporting characters. Baruch’s musical was about a hapless college student trying to ask the girl of his dreams out on a date and failing miserably each time. Although Queens College’s musical was about the apocalypse as an asteroid was due to collide with the earth, it drew laughs with how the characters tried to live their last days to their absolute fullest. Ultimately, Hunter’s show stealing musical was about four tourists seeing New York for the first time with the group dwindling gradually as each naïve member is slowly assimilated into the bustling world of business, the society of hipsters and an eastern European culture mecca.

Blurb #3

The Phantom of the Opera 25th anniversary concert is very simply, a spectacle. Andrew Lloyd Webber has personally chosen veteran Phantom actors Sierra Boggess and Ramin Karimloo, to star in the Royal Albert Hall birthday bash. Receiving personal instruction from the composer himself, Sierra’s bell-like soprano and Ramin’s booming baritone compliment each other with nary an off-note. Hardly one to stop with just his dream cast, the original creative team has been reassembled to adapt the show for an auditorium that would leave thousands awestruck. You don’t appreciate the difference that fifty extra chorus members until you’ve seen three separate choruses come together at the start of the second act. If the show was immersive before, it will certainly leave you speechless once you’ve seen it at its best.

A Month’s Worth of Haikus- Shannon Chen

10/6- Freedom

What is this feeling?

The end of obligation.

The wind in my hair.

10/7- Echoes

Echoing footsteps

Through familiar halls

Inside, my soul cries.

10/8- Companionship

Friendship has value

For no man is an island

But maybe I’ll swim.

10/9- Despair

I feel recklessness.

Coursing through my veins like fire.

I’m past salvation.

10/10- Salvation

How many have sought

The stairway to heaven

But found hell instead?

10/11- Simplicity

The complexities

Of cold inhuman nature

Lead us all astray.

10/12- Sacrifice

I stroll through the park

Even in the freezing cold

For love is worth it.

10/13- Disaster

Wardrobe malfunction

Pesky zipper come undone.

Afterwards, we laughed.

10/14- Lace

The lace-lined aisles

Beckon to me with their frills

Empty is my purse.

10/15- Lost

I once used to care.

Help, I think I’ve lost my way.

Can you help me please?

10/16- Euphoria

Count eleven days.

The clock ticks ever slowly.

Time for you to leave.

10/17- Precision

I love precision.

Seconds measure the moments.

Very specific.

10/18- Reality

What is this feeling?

Sharp, cold and unforgiving.

Like a knife in flame.

10/19- Camaraderie

The Big Bang Theory

One of my favorite shows.

The guys are such nerds.

10/20- Closure

I want you to know.

Closure is underrated.

You are a jackass.

10/21- Karaoke

Karaoke plans

Were made, but weren’t fulfilled.

Felt disappointment.

10/22- Delight

Ate frozen yogurt.

Spent time with good company.

And chocolate chips.

10/23- Popcorn

Craving some popcorn.

I’m glad the microwave works.

But it’s far away.

10/24- Fortune

A billion dollars.

I’d travel the world around.

Money solves your problems.

10/25- Lines

Ponder the straight line.

How exactly did it come to be?

It is unnatural.

10/27- Freedom

The revolution

Had been a long time coming

We fight for freedom.

10/28- Pause

At night, Saigon rests

Good men fighting for a cause

The gunfire ceases

10/29- Normal

The darkest days come

A perfect, loving family

A mother’s love fights.

10/30- Tod

A morbid affair with death,

That which there is no escape

Dancing on the edge

10/31-Angel

Angel or Phantom?

Dark man of mystery

Those you trust will lie.

11/1- Darling

Hello my darling,

Your eyes shimmer and sparkle

You’re dancing in my dreams

The Broadway Cares Flea Market- Feature Story

The annual Broadway Cares/Equity Fights Aids Flea Market is an event inundated with New Yorkers and tourists alike regardless of any previous affinity for the Broadway scene. The ambience of the event is unlike that of any other flea markets that are so commonplace in the city. Even the refreshments and scrumptious pastries being sold are personally baked by cast members and referred to as “Wickedly Sinful Slices of Chocolate Cake.” This is the theatre aficionado’s goldmine; whether you’re looking for a playbill featuring the original cast of South Pacific, earrings once donned by Patti LuPone or even the white lab coat worn by Ellen Barkin in The Normal Heart, chances are very good that you’ll find it either tucked thrown haphazardly in a cardboard box with dozens of other gems or being sold at the Grand Auction, where items generally sell for hundreds if not thousands of dollars. Blurb #2- Renaissance Fair

For almost fifteen years, I thought Medieval Festivals were unique to the more suburban parts of the country, like perhaps Upstate New York or Pennsylvania. What a pleasant surprise it was to find out that not only was there one in New York City, but that people dressed up for it with all the enthusiasm that could be expected. There were corsets and pantaloons aplomb on that festive Sunday! Even though there were just as many people in plain, modern day dress, one couldn’t escape from a swirl of gown and flash of puce at every turn. It could hardly be called an exclusive club, yet I found myself exchanging knowing glances whenever I saw someone else just like me, dressed up in their prettiest frocks.
