Apocalyptic Paranoia

These individuals have been gifted intellectually and socially. As we mentioned in class, Hildegard was already well established as a scholar before she was distinguished as a prophet. In general, one must seem credible and have an uncanny ability to relay their message to others to create a whole sect of people that follow their beliefs.

Paranoia is an overlying theme in both the 9 minute clip and “Dr. Strangelove”.  Strozier’s claim that the atom bomb became like a new religion is also clear it both pieces of media. Like a god, the atom bomb is revered for its power, but its ability to destroy the Earth fills people with fear and anticipation. Like John’s claim that Revelation portrayed events that would soon come to pass, the American government assured citizens that the atomic bomb could strike at any time. The anticipation of the atomic bomb became a creed to live your life by. “Dr. Stangelove” also portrays the violence that, Strozier says, can spring from apocalyptic thought through the General. A desire to do something to save oneself from eternal damnation whether it be inflicted by the Russians or by Satan. The atomic bomb started a new wave of apocalyptic paranoia and a new following of believers
