About Owen Toews

I am a PhD candidate in Geography at the CUNY Graduate Center where I research neoliberalism, settler colonialism, and the production of space. In past years I taught Urban Life 101 and Urban Revitalization in the department of Urban Affairs and Planning at Hunter College. I am a founding member of the DIY museum collective Winnipeg Arcades Project, where we experiment with different ways of combining knowledge and artistic production and display.

Our D Train website

The site that hosts the Google map and all the individual neighborhood sites is here. I’ve entered introductory content for each page (and an opening statement on the front page) more as a place holder than anything else. You can edit this site by adding yourself as a user (click the ‘Add user’ button on the right side of the page) and going in to the dashboard. Remember, this is your work, so you should present it exactly as you want it presented! Congratulations on your work this semester, and good luck finishing up your sites!

Website Project

You need to make two things for this project:

1) A website for your stop.
2) A marker with a label for your stop on the shared ‘D Train’ Google map.

Making a website for your stop

1. Sign in to Macaulay Eportfolios.
2. Create the URL and title for your site (remember, the URL is permanent, the title can be changed whenever you want).
3. Choose a theme (*TBA pending class discussion*)
4. Create pages for different aspects of your neighborhood’s story, e.g.
– Demographics
– Street life
– Social issues
5. Keep in mind tech fair Qs: Who is the audience for this site? How is a website different from a paper?
6. Use photo, video, mapping, links, and plugins (e.g. photo galleries, timelines) strategically.
7. Meet with Owen during office hours, send him an email, or search WordPress support forums for help.
8. Create the menu (the specific content and formatting that will appear online) for your site: Appearance > Menus > Pages > Add to Menu > Save Menu.
9. Take a look through your site and make sure it looks as you want it to.

Response Paper 2 – Immigrants in the 19th Century – Due Feb 26

The history of immigration is often told through the lens of those who came. This was the purpose of your first response paper; to step back and reconsider your family’s immigration narrative. In this paper you will consider how government and social organizations responded to the conditions of the City that resulted from rapid economic development and population growth.  Together these resulted in population density in lower Manhattan that have not occurred since.

In a 2-3 page essay take one or two interventions, e.g. the tenement laws, governmental regulation of immigration, social organizations such as the Children’s Aid Society, the settlement house movement and discuss 1) how these interventions sought to improve the material condition of the immigrant community, and 2) how successful you found them to be. Your response should demonstrate your understanding of the assigned readings.

Response Paper 1 – Immigrant Narrative – Due Feb 5

Write a 2-3page essay on you/your family’s immigration history and integration experiences.

In this essay you should briefly discuss where you/your family came from, why you/your family immigrated to the United States, where you/your family have settled since, and what have been you/your family’s integration experience. The conclusion should address one of the following questions:

  1. How is you/your family’s history typical or “normative” and how is you/your family’s history unique?
  2. How well has your family integrated and what had made the integration process difficult or easy?
