La Cage is a musical full of dancing, singing, flamboyant acting, and more than anything, it is a whole lot of fun. It’s not that hard to have fun at a club with performing drag queens!
The well-known show is about a non-traditional family. Georges (Christopher Sieber) is an average looking man who just happens to be a homosexual and owns a club in France called La Cage. However, his husband, Albin (Harvey Fierstein), is far from average. He stars in La Cage’s nightly show as ZaZa, the drag queen, and an overdramatic queen at that!
Everything goes awry when Georges’ son Jean-Michel (AJ Shively, raised by Georges and Albin) comes home saying that he will marry a girl named Anne (Heather Lindell). The problem here is that Anne’s father is a conservative public figure who would never step foot near a gay, let alone a drag queen. Therefore, Albin must disappear during the dinner when Anne’s family comes or pretend to be someone he’s not (Uncle Albin).
It’s a mad rush until the dinner where Albin finally decides to pose as Jean-Michel’s mother. “She” goes as far as pleasing her guests until accidently pulling off “her” wig while singing a passionate song, to the disgusted astonishment of Anne’s parents. In the end, as in any ordinary musical comedy, everything ends up for the better. Jean-Michel is happily engaged to Anne, Georges and Albin’s relationship is stronger, and Anne’s parents need to dress as drag queens in order to leave La Cage unscathed.
La Cage is definitely a musical to see if you want to cheer up. A lot of the music is recognizable and the lead is played by the all famous Harvey Fierstein who was in Hairspray and The Fiddler on the Roof!
Afterwards I waited at the stage door to get autographs and pictures, ending the day fantastically!
