For such a world renowned musical, it’s surprising I’ve never seen it before, let alone seen the movie! Mama Mia also proved to be a very different Broadway show than I’m used to seeing, being in a large tourist theatre with an otherwise unknown cast. The main premise is set to the famous music by the Swedish pop group ABBA. Although the music is very catchy and fun to listen to, I found the musical itself is a little lacking.
The main premise is a silly and entertaining one: Sophie Sheridan (Liana Hunt) is getting married and invites her father whom she’s never met. The crazy thing is that she isn’t sure who her father is so she invites three men who were previously in her mother’s life: Bill Austin, Harry Bright, and Sam Carmichael. These men have no idea why they are on this nostalgic Greek island where they spent some of their younger years, and Donna (Lisa Brescia) has no idea her former lovers are staying at her shoddy hotel.
The vocals and set are not as great as other Broadway productions I’ve seen. Much of the cast are starring in their Broadway debuts! The set was a revolving one, and somewhat 
resembled the white and blue stucco buildings thought of when picturing Greece, but there was not much more. The costumes were so-so and nothing to die for.
The best part of the musical was probably the relationship between Donna and her two friends Tanya and Rosie. These two middle aged women are hysterical: one being of the intellectual type while the other is on her third marriage and depicts the stereotypical housewife. I believe they were the most experienced, as well, in terms of singing and acting.

Oh, mamma mia! I can’t believe you’ve never seen it before! The music by ABBA is so iconic, but I get what you mean about the production being lacking. It’s interesting how the set and costumes didn’t quite live up to the music. The relationship between Donna and her friends sounds like the highlight of the show, though. It’s always great to see strong female characters on stage. Can’t wait to hear more about your theatre adventures!
