Baby It’s You

Baby It's You

The musical Baby It’s You, though seemingly based on the story of the black female voice group, The Shirelles, is mainly focused on the life of their manager Florence Greenberg, a “true Jew”, and how she became someone in the music business.  The show uses music from the era (1958-1965), not only from the girl group, but from many other famous hit artists of the time. Mamma Mia!

Mamma Mia Encore

For such a world renowned musical, it’s surprising I’ve never seen it before, let alone seen the movie!  Mama Mia also proved to be a very different Broadway show than I’m used to seeing, being in a large tourist theatre with an otherwise unknown cast.  The main premise is set to the famous music by the Swedish pop group ABBA.  Although the music is very catchy and fun to listen to, I found the musical itself is a little lacking. Jerusalem

Jerusalem Cast

Upon reading any reviews of Jerusalem, you would not be able to figure out the plot line or meaning of the 3 hour long play.  This is because there was no plot.  Jerusalem seemed to be a character study of Johnny “Rooster” Byron (Mark Rylance), a drunken man living in a caravan in the Flintock woods.  He throws huge, noisy parties and attracts the attention of many teenage delinquents.  His caravan acts as a sort of headquarters for this bunch of teens.  At the same time, he doesn’t pay taxes and is being fined and kicked off the land by the police.  Continue reading →

Monty Python’s Spamalot

Spamalot

Having only a vague recollection of Monty Python humor, I still knew that I was in for a treat when going to see Spamalot.  One should know before getting tickets to a show like this, that it is full of “stupid British humor” but is really a load of fun.  This musical is “lovingly Spamalotripped off from the motion picture Monty Python and the Holy Grail” (which I rented after the show) and is centered on the story of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table. Catch Me If You Can

Catch Me If You Can

Based on the Leonardo DiCaprio film, Catch Me If You Can is a musical filled with excitement and flash.  The story is based on the life of Frank Abagnale Jr., a young man wanted for check fraud during the ‘60s who later became an important person working for the FBI.

The musical starts off at the end of the story, where Frank (Aaron Tveit) acknowledges the audience and tells them his story with big flashy dance numbers with a traditional female chorus (not seen much now on Broadway).  When he was 16 years old, his parents split.  His father, a “schemer” himself, was no longer able to pay the bills, forcing his mother to have an affair with another man.  Frank takes this opportunity to run away from the Catch Me If You Can - Aaron Tveitproblem and start up a better life for himself, hoping one day to be able to repay his father for everything and get his parents back together. La Cage Aux Folles

La Cage Aux Folles

La Cage is a musical full of dancing, singing, flamboyant acting, and more than anything, it  is a whole lot of fun.  It’s not that hard to have fun at a club with performing drag queens!

The well-known show is about a non-traditional family.  Georges (Christopher Sieber) is an average looking man who just happens to be a homosexual and owns a club in France called La Cage.  However, his husband, Albin (Harvey Fierstein), is far from average.  He La Cage Aux Follesstars in La Cage’s nightly show as ZaZa, the drag queen, and  an overdramatic queen at that!  Continue reading →

High

High, a new play by Matthew Lombardo, is far from a happy story.  The play is one about Hightwo characters, Sister Jamison Conelly and Cody Randall.  Sister Conelly (Kathleen Turner) is a recovering alcoholic and drug addict who became a nun to help others like her.  She works in a Catholic treatment center along with Father Michael (Stephen Kunken).

A new patient named Cody Randall (Evan Jonigkeit) is admitted to the recovery center against his own will after having drugged and killed a 14 year old boy.  He works along Sister Conelly, also suffering her own problems, unwillingly.  He seems to feel more comfortable talking to her than anyone else.  He doesn’t stay clean though, and leaves the treatment center to get some heroin. Rain: A Beatles Experience

Rain

Let me take you down, ‘cause I’m going to… RAIN!  Rain is a Beatles tribute that has been performing all over the world and the country for decades.  Their goal is to entertain the audience and take them back to the time of the ‘60s.

The show does this in multiple ways.  The first, and obvious, way is through the fantastic music of the Beatles.  The band went through all the different stages: the early ‘60s “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” stage, the “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Heart Club Band” stage, the Rubber Soul stage, the Indian Influence stage, and so on.  Through the music and through the costumes the audience felt like they were there. Arcadia

The play Arcadia by Tom Stoppard is not a show you should go to see if you think you can Arcadia by Tom Stoppardsleep half the time and still understand the plot-line.  This complicated, intense play requires the audience’s full attention.  This doesn’t mean, however, that there aren’t laughs interspersed throughout the script; quite the contrary!  Arcadia is full of humor, science, math, literature, history, curiosity, and love.
