Gowanus Canal from Union Street Bridge by David M. Verrico

“Gowanus Canal from Union Street Bridge, Brooklyn, NY 1994”

by David M. Verrico

1. This is a color film photograph of the Gowanus Canal, with Brooklyn on one side and barbed wires with a metal fence on the other. There is a sharp contrast on the left and right sides of the photo. The Brooklyn side is very vibrant and bright with clear skies and calm still water. The barbed wire side is very dark and dull with barbed wire covering the entire fence. This difference represents the dual nature of Brooklyn, where it can be bright and beautiful sometimes and also dark and scary at others. The Brooklyn area is open space and looks welcoming, while the barbed area is closed off and the barbed wire represents an unwelcoming barrier.

2. This picture was chosen because it depicts all of Brooklyn and should be put in Brooklyn College, which is one of the colleges that represent Brooklyn itself. It is located on the fourth floor of the library, which is very isolated with few people coming up here. This picture represents the many hidden and unspoken treasures of Brooklyn, how it is contrasting, and how few people see Brooklyn this way.
