Shahzia Sikander’s Embark/Disembark VI caught our attention as we walked down the corridor in the fourth floor. This work, created through photolithography and screen-printing, was difficult at first to view because the colors are pale and the light coming in from the window glares on it. This required us to get very close to the print to observe it. The white illustrations, which depict flowers and various woodland animals, are set on a light peach background. Although the details are difficult to see on such a light background, they are very intricate. It also takes a while for us to scan the print as the floral patterns and animals are entangled. Close and careful observation reveals a lot of fauna that are hidden within the hodgepodge. The silhouettes used to portray the animals could also fool the viewers, causing them to mistaken one animal for another, unless they study the painting well.
