This course has involved an intense examination of ethnicity throughout New York City. In particular, we have studied Staten Island diversity. Our research was focused on eight different ethnic groups throughout the Staten Island and New York City region: Albanian, Italian, Irish, Chinese, Liberian, Mexican, Sri Lankan, and Russian. While New York City as a whole is known for its abundant diversity, most people think of Staten Islanders as a homogenous group of people. Despite these commonly held beliefs, the research conducted by our class has illuminated the array of cultures that exists within our borough. We have visited cultural institutions in Staten Island, as well as conducted interviews with people from each of these six ethnic groups. Our findings indicate that in recent decades, minority populations have been on the rise in Staten Island. Due to this increase, we have seen an upsurge in cultural institutions (churches, restaurants, etc.) Going through this site, you can see the discoveries we made about each of the eight ethnic groups.
