America today placesĀ an emphasis on equality between people of all races and ethnicities. One would think that this would be reflected in the educational system. Yet despite the decision of Brown vs. Board of Education to desegregate schools in America sixty years ago, there is evidence, which suggests there is still segregation amongst schools. Staten Island is a diverse city, and incorporates individuals of all races, however people of different races populate areas along with other individuals of their backgrounds. Are our school systems reproducing social inequality?
Our main objective was to gauge whether the populations surrounding a school, reflected the individuals in schools by race. We wanted to test whether or not Staten Island schools were segregated by race, ethnicity or class. We also used the performance of schools to determine if schools of primarily different ethnicities outperform other schools. Does this segregation have an effect on the performance of the individuals in a school?
