Young At Heart or Immature In Thinking

Published by Sijia Sun under Tell Me Who You Are

Min Ye or Tell Me Who You Are certainly revealed a new way to look at polygamous marriage for me. The film shows none of the weak and passive personalities I used to associate with wives in polygamous marriage. However, the main character, Mimi, fails to appeal to me despite her strong personality and independent abilities. The melodrama focuses too much on Mimi’s buffoonery and leaves no ground for any self-respecting viewer to identify or sympathize with Mimi.

Verbally, Mimi excuses her behavior as labors of “true love”, but all her actions points to childish attempts to revenge a polygamous husband by having multiple lovers. I wouldn’t be surprised if Mimi keep a list of names of any person who has ever offended her. Mimi’s social statues and connections in the wealthy class only increased the degree of ridiculousness of her actions. In reality, the story might be amusing as it slaps the wealthy and educated (supposedly wiser) class in the face, but in a film, it way more repetitive and monotonous to keep the viewers awake.

I’m not too sure if Mimi is immature. I think she’s more along the lines of indecisive – she wants to be with her husband for the sake of doing “what’s right”, but she wants to be with her lover because her needs are satisfied with him.

Again, we’re all justified in our own opinions.

And it makes whole situation entertaining, to the viewers, but frustrating, for the characters in it, because Mimi has the financial resource and physical attractiveness(though I wonder why) to carry out all the craziness that an actual young person in love usually cannot do.

I like your idea of “young at heart or immature in thinking” because I think they can either go hand in hand or go in opposite directions.
I personally believe that Min Ye combined these two categories together– Mimi is immature in her actions and is definitely young with love in her heart.
