Demographics

Morningside Heights is a diverse neighborhood with many ethnicities. From 2007 to 2011, Morningside Heights had a total population of 53,933, 3.4% of Manhattan’s total population of 1,588,357. Of this total population, the foreign-born population comprised of 30% of the total population in Morningside Heights and 3.6% of the total foreign-born population in Manhattan. Click on the images to enlarge.

Marco Rodriguez, a security guard at St. Luke’s Hospital who has lived his entire life in Morningside Heights, said that the demographics of the neighborhood has changed over the past few decades. When Rodriguez was younger, he stated that Morningside Heights had a very black and white dichotomy; however, now, the neighborhood is very diverse with multiple race and ethnicities. Click on the images to enlarge.

Due to the abundance of academic institutions within the area, much of the Morningside Heights population is attributed to college students. Of the multiple institutions located in Morningside Heights, Columbia University has the most dominant presence. As a whole in Fall 2013, Columbia University had a total of 29,250 students, 54.2% of the total population of Morningside Heights. This past fall, in undergraduate admissions, Columbia University admitted 2,311 students to its Class of 2017. Although predominately white, Columbia is still quite diverse in ethnicities. Click on the images to enlarge.
