Lower Manhattan: Modern Streets and 1609 Shoreline
Photo 1: 400 years ago, this was Marine Deepwater
Intersection of Water Street & Wall Street
This area was particularly quiet and didn’t have much people passing by. The wind was especially strong in this area since we were at the water’s edge.
Photo 2: 400 years ago, this was Marine Eelgrass Meadows
Intersection of Pearl Street & Wall Street
There was a little kid riding a scooter that rode over part of the chalk causing his mom to yell at him. We told her it was fine and we were doing it for school project. No comment back.
Photo 3: 400 years ago, this was Marine Gravel Sand Beach
Intersection of Pearl Street & Wall Street
A bit north from the spot in photo two. There were more people in this area now, and we received more glances for chalking in the middle of the street.
Photo 4: 400 years ago, this was Maritime Beach
Intersection of Hanover Street & Pearl Street
People went around us and stared but no comments. It was strange to be writing Maritime Beach in on the foot of a luxurious apartment building.
Photo 5: 400 years ago, this was Coastal Oak-Pine Forest
Intersection of Hanover Street & Wall Street
Intersection of Hanover and Wall Street. As we move up Wall Street, there seems to be more and more people, but there are still no questions or comments directed towards us regarding what we are doing. This side street was especially quiet for a Sunday.
Photo 6: 400 years ago, this was Salt Scrub
Intersection of Nassau Street & William Street
Outside public space, we ran into a member of another group who was looking for a bathroom.
Photo 7: 400 years ago, this was Oak-Tulip Tree (American Chestnut) Forest
Intersection of Wall Street and Nassau Street
Drawing on public stone benches. Crowded area, no questions asked though just stares. Again, it was strange to be writing “tree” on a man made cement bench in front of the New York Stock Exchange.
Photo 8: 400 years ago, this was Marsh Headwater Stream
Intersection of Wall Street & Broadway Street
Woman stood still and stared for extended period of time. Lots of tourists in the heart of the Financial District.
Photo 9: 400 years ago, this was Coastal Oak-Beach Forest
Intersection of Broadway Street & Exchange Plaza Street
Middle of street, guy passing by with trash can. Imagining the Lenape paths along the bustling street of Broadway.
Photo 10: 400 years ago, this was Lenape Habitation Site
Intersection of Wall Street & Broadway Street
Sound of bells from Trinity church.
Photo 11: 400 years ago, this was the Springs
Intersection of Maiden Street & Nassau Street
Our last stop, hard to picture springs in the midst of this crowded intersection.
