My family has always been a lover of cultures, and the food has sometimes been the driving force of this appreciation. The food of a people group is a defining factor, something that sets them apart from another ethnicity and region. Seeing a restaurant of a different cuisine shows a prominence of an ethnicity or a fondness for its flavours. One of the things I most love about New York is the way it celebrates, as Gabaccia calls it, its “culinary cultural pluralism”. The accessibly to food from all over the globe, within such a small radius, is phenomenal and enticing. I don’t know what I would do without my Thai lunch specials, Indian food on Lexington Avenue, the cute French café close by, or even the 24 hour American diner.
