Between the triangular region made by Broadway, Fifth Avenue, 22nd and 23rd street sits the infamous Flatiron Building. A building of commercial office space since its construction in 1902, one of New York City’s first skyscrapers is an iconic landmark. Within the typical shots of New York, the Flatiron more often than not makes an appearance. So well-known, the area around the building is even called the Flatiron district. The particular architecture employed when constructing the Flatiron includes beaux-arts styles, with classical columns built from limestone. Detailing also includes lion heads, decorative flowers and other geometric designs. What is also so unique about the Flatiron is its triangular shape, rounded, thin front, and resemblance to the cast-iron clothes irons used in the early 20th century, from which it gets its name. The Flatiron building was a precursor to the numerous skyscrapers soon to be built and uptown expansion soon to occur in New York City.
