Demographics

The neighborhoods of Washington Heights and Inwood make up Manhattan Community District 12.  According to the 2000 US census it has a population of 208,414.  Hispanics constitute an absolute majority of this population at about 74.1%.

From 1990 to 2000, the Hispanic population has increased from 67% to 74% while the White and Black populations have been declining not just as a percentage of the population but in absolute numbers as well.  The numbers of White non-Hispanics fell from 37,021 to 28,242 and the number of Black non-Hispanics fell from 5,080 to 3,459.  Other minority groups have remained fairly stagnant as a percentage of the population

Hispanics make up the bulk of the foreign born population, which is already a majority of the District 12 population.  Dominicans are 71% of the foreign born Hispanics.  The next graph shows the breakdown of countries of origin of Hispanics
