The Collage Project was a project that had a lot of freedom in what I wanted to do. It was extremely flexible but what that really means is that coming up with a theme is a bit harder than one would think it would be. With this project, I was able to connect everyday life with a unique value in my culture as well as my love for numbers.
There were a few times where I used other people’s images but for the most part, I wanted to capture my own photos. For my street photography project I used my phone to have a certain effect in order to describe the mobility of New Yorkers, but in the Collage project, everything has more detail and because of that I decided to use my DSLR in order to capture all of the detail as well as add some effects through the use of photoshop and depth of field.
The project was a fun project but I quickly realized how obvious some of the objects were that I wanted to try to think a little more outside the box. The whole idea of pairing eventually lead me to the double happiness Chinese character. That Chinese character eventually lead me to the idea of love. Perhaps the most fascinating love is young love. It has that unique quality of innocence that I wanted to employ into my collage. I decided to juxtapose peanut butter and jelly because we all ate that when we were younger and the two sides always stuck together like a couple in love.
Some difficulties I faced during the creation of my collage included the fact that I had to carry my camera with me for a week. It was very heavy and tiring to be holding a brick of a camera. I also took many pictures but I really wanted to cut down on the quantity because each picture would have more value and each of those so called thousand words in the photos would linger better in the memory. I also faced a problem with the public. Attempting to take pictures of couples left me a lot of stares and threats but in the end I am still alive and well.
The collage project has opened my eyes and showed me how a theme can be found in New York. After listening to other proposals I realized the there are so many unique themes just waiting to be captured in this great city of ours.
