New York City is known for its diversity of people, beliefs, and food. However, if you ask somebody to name the all-New York, or even, all-American food, you’d likely hear the word “hamburger”. Its true, the burger is representative of American culture. However, it doesn’t capture the entire picture of New York.
If you travel from one neighborhood to the next, you will notice the ethnic differences and their corresponding cuisines. They differ greatly from one to the other, and the unique flavors, spices, and ingredients cannot be ignored.
One a quest to create the real New York burger, I combined all the cultural dishes that resemble a burger. I focused on the different neighborhoods in Queens, perhaps the most diverse borough, and the way that each group of immigrants sold their food. It’s important to consider how store and restaurant fronts in these areas look, in comparison to the common McDonalds or Burger King. Looking at the burgers and sandwiches of China, Poland, Greece, Egypt, and many more, its possible to see what ingredients the American burger adapted or left behind.
A prevalent theme within the collage is cultural diffusion. Other cultures impact the American lifestyle; and American traditions, in turn, impact the rest of the world.
This is a fantastic work/collage project. You capture NYC and its diverse food cultures.
