This chapter focuses on the medical care for the homeless. The medical issues of the homeless aren’t being put into perspective with social, economic and political issues.

            Atkinson, R.. (2003). Urban Studies. Domestication by Cappuccino or a Revenge on Urban Space? Control and Empowerment in the Management of Public Spaces (Vol. 40, pp. 1829 -1843).

            This article talks about how public space is being used. It also studies the purpose of    public space.

Lee, F. R. (1989, Mar 25). Homeless: Urban Woe Lands on S.I.. The New York Times

 

This article, published in 1989, discusses the Staten Island Ferry Terminal that infamously was a location in which homeless individuals sought out for shelter.  Individuals who take the ferry as a form of mass transportation are unhappy and uncomfortable with the presence of homeless individuals.  The article is useful in examining pre-existing conditions of homelessness on Staten Island.

This article addresses the chaos of the drop-in center of Staten Island’s Project Hospitality through the encounters of those who utilize the facilities, including an unidentified woman from New Dorp, and from officials.  It discusses the problems within the small facility, including lack of proper facilities for its guests, fighting and issues of drug and alcohol abuse.

This book reads into who the homeless are in the United States, the economic causes of homelessness, and the contraction of social welfare. It also explores housing, the mentally ill homeless, social movements, advocates, and the law. Municipal responses in New York City to wealth, poverty, and homeless individuals and families are also discussed, along with homelessness and social policy and homelessness and common human needs.

            This book serves to define today’s homeless families, as it analyzes the change of demographics that have taken place.

Specifically, the annual report found on the website for the Coalition of the Homeless gives us evidence that disproves many common misconceptions and myths about homelessness in New York City.

Project Hospitality’s website provides information on issues that affect the hungry and homeless on Staten Island. Many websites and other resources can be allocated from their website, as links to more information on poverty, hunger, and homeless and housing can be accessed.
