Due via link below on February 13, and short presentation in class

As Jelani Cobb’s article in the New Yorker makes clear, housing and schooling are closely linked, and both are linked to opportunities and inequalities derived from race, class, and income that have persisted for generations. In this assignment, I ask you to consider your own situation in this context.

Please write a brief (about one page) description of the places you have lived in your lifetime. For each one, please indicate, if possible:

  1. Where it was/is located (city and neighborhood)
  2. Whether it was/is a house or apartment;
  3. Its size and condition, and whether they were/are appropriate for the household;
  4. Whether your household owned or rented;
  5. Whether your household considered it affordable.
  6. Why you lived there (e.g., schools, friends, family, job, etc.);
  7. If you moved, why; and
  8. How long you lived there.

You may need to interview your parents or other family members to get this information.

In addition, this assignment requires you to practice using Maps Marker Pro, which is a mapping software on the ePortfolios site. Please produce a map that indicates all places where you have lived as part of your assignment. We will have a brief tutorial on the software in class.

UPDATE: After following the directions for creating a map in the map tutorial, make sure that you

  1. Title your map layer with your last name only.
  2. Please be sure to embed your map into a post that is titled simply with your last name. You do not need to add any extra words to the title. You only need to embed your map in this post, without adding any extra text.
  3. Make sure you select the Maps category for your post.

Finally, in class on February 13, you will present your personal housing history in 3 to 5 minutes, using one PowerPoint or Keynote slide that captures the most important elements of your history. If there are aspects of your history that you are not comfortable sharing with the class, that is fine. You can omit those aspects or certain details. If you are not sure how to do this, please contact me in advance. If you are concerned about issues of immigration status or legal status, please contact me in advance.
