Friday (4/4) field trip

As discussed in class, we will meet at the Queens Museum at 11:30am on Friday.  Bring the maps I handed out in class, or a way to view the online versions.  here’s a link to the directions page :

p.s. you can email your essay to me (remember to check for my reply saying I received it) or bring hardcopy to the museum.  and since there are no readings, you don’t have to post  a blog entry.

Maps for 4/4 field trip

I will hand out black and whites for all these maps in class, but they are much better in color.  in some cases, you will have to search through a report.  In the 2006 Women and HIV report, the maps i handed out are on pages 19-22.  for the 2009 HIV in NYC report, the maps are on page 4.

March 7 field trip

On March 7, we will meet at 11:45 at the Harm Reduction Coalition: http://harmreduction.org

the address is 22 W 27th street, #5.  near 34th st stop on D,B, or Q (all express) or 28th st stop on N, R (local)

The readings for March 7th and 14th are all about race, incarceration, and the war on the drugs.  this material can be enraging, disturbing, and/or somewhat depressing, depending on where you are coming from as a reader.  the good news is that there is also a community based public health response to drug use, that both critiques the war on drugs and provides a very real alternative.  so we will start with public health, and then move on to looking directly at the war on drugs and mass incarceration.

you are still responsible for doing a blog post, since there are readings for the day.  we will learn about harm reduction and the work of the coalition, and meet with the executive director and the medical director.  you can bring lunch, if you want, since we will be in a conference room most of the time (I’m not allowed to use macaulay funds for field trip lunches, so you are on your own).
