Congresswoman Nydia M. Velasquez (D) in the House of Representatives. She is a ranking member of the Small Business Committee and a senior member of the Financial Services committee. She is the first woman of Latin American descent to chair a full Congressional committee.
On a federal level, Bushwick is located under District 7. District 7 encompasses three boroughs: Manhattan (lower Manhattan), Queens (Ridgewood and Maspeth) and Brooklyn (Bushwick, Greenpoint, Williamsburg).

Velazquez serves the residents of three boroughs in District 7. (This map was taken from:http://velazquez.house.gov/ny7/index.shtml).
Some examples of legislation that Congresswoman Velasquez worked on are:
1) American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009: This Act created 3500 high waged jobs for New Yorkers. The workers will be improving the quality of life for the residents of the housing projects by renovating the buildings. This Act is important for the residents of Bushwick Houses because under the Bush Administration, funding for the housing projects was cut; however, now under the Obama administration funding has increased. In fact, for every $1 that is invested into this program it is expected to generate $2.12.
2) Energy Independence and Security Act: This was signed into law in 2009 through the tireless efforts of Nydia Velasquez. Under this Act, entrepreneurs were given the tools to acquire efficient technologies and increase renewable production. Essentially, the law reauthorized the Small Business Innovation Research, which helps small businesses gain access to capital by allowing them to renew green tax credit so that it will be easier for them to take out loans.

Erik Martin Dilan (D) for District 37; Dilan is the son of New York State Senator Martin Malave Dilan (see above). He is also the Chairperson of the Housing and Buildings Committee where he implements laws and policies aimed at addressing the needs of both the tenants and the landlords.
Some examples of Dilan’s legislation include: The Alternative Enforcement Program, this program seeks to improve overall housing inspections and repairs, especially for low-income residents. Moreover, it also supports rent regulation, which is a major issue in the neighborhood because of the recent developments in Bushwick that have led to an increase in rent prices.
