Unauthorized Migration and the Social Contract

As we have read and discussed in class, one of the most important and common arguments against unauthorized migration is that tolerating it threatens the social contract. The legal and political order of our society would be weakened or destroyed if we were to permit violations of the law, such as unauthorized migration. For this reason, proponents of this view emphasize the term illegal immigration.

In order to understand this stance, you may read this summary of the version of social contract theory proposed by the English philosopher Thomas Hobbes. Perhaps more importantly, I encourage you to read this account of three reasons why people may hold a Hobbesian social contract view against illegal immigration today.

Thomas Hobbes (1588-1679)
