Craft of Dancing – Question on Reading

  • The author states throughout pages 190 to 192 that a dancer should be and be able to do many things; are these techniques really needed to convey the content of the choreography?
  • The author also states that “There are no good or bad movements other than ones that will hurt a dancer’s body” (192). If this is true then how are dancers ranked or graded? Ex. Grading in a performing arts school

Question on the Reading: No Next Chelsea

Saltz shares that “Even a powerhouse like Barbara Gladstone went through years of showing iffy and even awful artists (ahem, moi). It’s just that few people saw her do this (fortunately for me).” This detail about the authors life brings me to ask if maybe his failure in art is why he points out “bad” art so much? Is the author speaking out of spite due to his failure when it came to becoming an artist? Do you think that the time (2006) that this article was written had any influence on his outlook on art at the time?

Understanding Art: Chapter 2

The author states that artists “employ the visual elements of art to express themselves” in their art (26). Is it possible for an artist to not use all of the elements stated and still be able to convey his feelings to the audience? Is the lack of using all the visual elements the reason for people interpreting the same art piece differently?

Similarly, if the artist was not entirely sure of what they wanted to convey and just started working on an art piece would they unconsciously use these visual elements without even realizing?

“You Never Can Tell” & “The Art of Theatre” – Questions on the Reading

You Never Can Tell

  • Why did Gloria, Phillip, and Dolly’s mother choose to raise them in the manner she did? Was it truly to hide them from the second sort of “family life” she mentioned early in the play or was it for her to ensure her own independence and privacy?

The Art of Theatre

  • Since criticism requires the critic to “bring to the work some set of standards developed essentially from personal experience”, how reliable can a critics criticism really be since a critic with personal experience on a certain topic may have a more enhanced understanding than another? Would the playwrights intended message not vary according to the different people who view his piece? Is it even possible to have a completely un-biased critique on any piece of Art including theatre? (81)

“Understanding Art” – Question on the Reading

  • Since art is often mentioned to be a means of finding meaning or truth to oneself, would art be considered a type of psychology due to their similarities in wanting to find answers and solutions? (6)
  • Georges Seurat stated that “Art is harmony”. If art is harmony then must it not also contain chaos? Wouldn’t there have to be a sense of chaos for one to notice the harmony portrayed? (12)
  • Also as Meera stated, Leo Tolstoy expressed that “Art is not a handicraft, it is the transmission of feeling the artist has experienced.” Does this mean that even a person who has not felt the certain emotion the artist is trying to portray, would look upon the piece of art and feel it? (15)
