About Maria Daniela Ospina

i was born in Colombia in 1995 and I came to this country in 2010 when i was 15. it was really difficult for me because i have to leave everything and all the people i love but it was also an awesome experience because I learn new things and most important a new language

The Armory Show

The Armory Show was the first exhibition of modern art in the United States. The kind of art shown in the Armory Show changed the view of americans towards art. “American audience were used to seeing Rembrandts and Titians in their galleries” (Marilyn Kushner). Therefore, americans were shocked with this new movement of art.

One of my favorites piece of art was “The beheading of saint John” By Pierre Puvis de Chavannes. This helped the new form of art because it showed a reality and not just perfect beings as the rembrandts and titians. Basically what this pieces of art is illustrating, it’s the suffering of Christ but at the same time his Joy, which could be interpreted as a blessing to obtain grace which the reward of eternal life by accepting Christ’s name.

Another piece of art that caught my attention was “Silence” By Odilon Rendon. it was interesting that she has her fingers to her lips as if she was silencing herself. Her eyes are down cast and she looks ashamed of herself. The colors in this piece of art can depict the sadness and the hopelessness. During this time of period, it was the progressive era where everyone was happy but she looks sad because women are still being oppressed and she has to keep silent.

The third piece of art that i found intriguing was “Blue Nude” By Henri Matisse. It draws from a traditional reclining female nude that brigs us back to the Renaissance. This piece of art is a distorter image of the female form. What the author is trying to show with this piece of art, it’s maybe how women were feeling during the time of Renaissance. During that time Women were oppressed by men. They didn’t have legal power.  So what this piece of art can be representing is the freedom that women wanted to have but they couldn’t. Also they desire to be heard and not only just seen. The color in this piece of art help the viewers have an image of that desire and also gives more live to the painting itself.

Question on the reading “Shock of the New”

On page 20, it’s mention how the paintings by Picasso and Braque “were moving rapidly towards abstraction”  creating a tension between the “reality” and “the meditation of visual language”

  • Does this mean that the reality from the painting is different than the reality from outside ?
  • is it the visual language from the painter’s perspective or from the audience perspective?

Chelsea Galleries

The piece of art “Group of teachers” by Martin Honert was located at the Matthew Marks Gallery. I found this piece very interesting and very different from the other types of art that were in the gallery. the group of teachers definitively stood out because they were at the end of a big room and the light of the room was mostly focus on them. This could represent Honert’s childhood experience at boarding school and also the impact and influence the “group of teachers” had on him. The light could represent a memory from the past, and how this memory remains in Honert’s life even thought these people are not longer close to him. Although the characters are smiling, there is something that made me keep away from them. Maybe because their face expressions or perhaps the feeling that they were watching me was scary and it made me feel uncomfortable when I was in front of them.

While I was walking i saw a little piece that really caught my attention. I never thought that i was going to find such a beautiful piece on the street. When i saw this i was so in love with it because i thought it was really cute and also very creative. I immediately began to think to whom the idea has occurred  and also what was his purpose by drawing this on the street. After i saw this piece i was very happy because it reminded me of my little brother and the drawings that he likes to do.

Craft of Dancing

When the author states ” the audiences sometimes will say “that was a great choreography” when what they really mean is that the dancers; performances of the steps pleased them. Others might say, “that choreography was difficult” but what they really mean is that the steps were difficult to perform”. Does he mean that the steps are separate from the choreography? Aren’t the steps the ones that create the choreography ?
