…How astonishing that this should be written by a woman in 1845!…Fuller was going to places that others, especially women of the time, could not go and informing the world very eloquently of the need she saw…Not only did a woman write for this respected paper but she also looked seriously and thoughtfully at the lives of those in need and reported about it, honestly. She thought there was “no reason why New York should not become a model” and lead the rest of the nation and world to treat issues of need with respect and sympathy. Indeed, New York is still a city where people believe we ought to do better and be on the cutting edge of positive reform. Margaret Fuller reminds me of the coexistence that can be hoped for after the conflict.
