The scene before the riot, Everdeane cries out that the conflict will “never” be over, and it is true that the conflict still is not over. How should we react to the changing (or unchanging) city? According to William, a “native” is someone who is willing to die for the land, and he claims to die as an American; this is soon contradicted with the ending credit song which specifies the hands that built America. In the end, what began as the identity problem becomes an ongoing problem: it was there, before the movie, during the movie, and after the movie.
