In describing the Draft Riots, Templeton does not only give a better sense of the bloodshed and gore and atrocities committed by the masses but also provides a glimpse into his views on slavery and what it does to society.  He describes the crimes against the black population as the worst of all the things that happened during the riots, the crimes committed having “unspeakable infamy.”  He described the blacks being targeted as the least appropriate target for attacks as they were the “most peaceable, sober and inoffensive of [the] poor.”  He even compares the atrocities committed against them to the “Jew-hunting of the Middle Ages.”  He stated that it is slavery that had caused these atrocities, the institution had in a way changed the way society viewed blacks of the time and he showed lack of faith in the government of providing any justice to the victims.
