Sal, Pino, Vito and Mookie all have very different relationships with the neighborhood around them. Although Sal cannot really be characterized as ‘nice’ (but honestly no one can), he is still accepting and accepted in the neighborhood but still operates on his own rules (Wall of Fame incident). His older son, Pino, dislikes blacks throughout the movie to the point where he shares that he’s embarrassed to work in a predominantly black and Hispanic neighborhood and wants to move the pizzeria. We don’t see a lot of how Vito feels, but we do know that he’s good friends with Mookie and he doesn’t seem to have any objection. Mookie serves as a bridge between Sal’s and the neighborhood in which he has a duty towards both. It’s very interesting that Sal’s family spent a large part of their lives in the same neighborhood with the same experiences, but all have developed different views and opinions on it. It also shows Spike Lee’s ability to represent and portray all these different ideas and groups.
