Downtown Brooklyn

Shopping

Don’t want to go all the way to Manhattan but still have the urge to go shopping? Then have no fear because you can still go to Downtown Brooklyn! Shopping in Downtown is the ultimate experience. With less crowding than Manhattan but with the same stores and reputation than its counterpart, Downtown Brooklyn is a large attraction to the people of New York.

Fulton Street Mall

Here is what you would most probably hear while walking down one of Downtown Brooklyn’s shopping spaces.

Most stores are down Fulton Street named after Robert Fulton, an icon well known for providing a ferry between Brooklyn and Manhattan before the Brooklyn Bridge was built (via Fulton Mall ). Because of this, Fulton Mall is easily memorable with the many teens loitering the sidewalk and food stores, adding to the big energy surrounding the area.

Mostly an outdoor pedestrian mall, it has a unique mix of shops: you can easily find a couple of individual or family owned business that are right next door to national chain stores such as Old Navy and H&M. Additionally, there are is a variety of street vendors out by the sidewalks that are selling things ranging from sunglasses to CD’s of blues and jazz music. Fulton Mall offers an unique experience that can only be found right here in Brooklyn.

Opened in 2012, the Barclay’s Center has now become the destination spot for performers in the world of Glamour. City Point:

A new indoor mall, it is a major redevelopment initiative of the NYCEDC as an outgrowth of the Downtown Brooklyn Plan and a centerpiece of the revitalization of Downtown Brooklyn (via NYCEDC).

According to their website, it: “…is the largest food, shopping and entertainment destination in Downtown Brooklyn. It includes retail, residential, and office space located along Brooklyn’s busiest retail corridor at the corner of Flatbush and Fulton (via City Point).”

For now Target, Century 21, and a movie theater have already opened their doors for business inside the mall and they plan on opening new stores (both big chain stores and individually owned stores) in the future. Some of the potential stores include: Trader Joe’s and Fortina, a pizza shop. But in the meantime, everyone can also enjoy their leisure time by taking a break from shopping while sitting down in the chairs and tables that is right in front of the mall at Albee’s Square Plaza. Bask in the weather, watch all of the people pass by, use the free Wi-Fi, and enjoy the occasional public performances that take place there.
