St. George’s Episcopal Church, founded in 1702, is a landmark church that has served Flushing’s Anglican community for over 300 years. Services were first conducted in the Old Parish House (located at the intersection of Main Street and Northern Boulevard) until 1746, when the church was erected on Main Street. Throughout its history, St.George’s church has had several notable historical figures, including Francis Lewis, signer of the Declaration of Independence and vestryman of the church, and Samuel Seabury, rector of the church and first bishop of the Episcopal Church in America. More importantly, St. George’s has seen greater diversity in its membership; from serving German, English, and Dutch immigrants in the years following its inception, the church now serves Hispanics, Asians, and African Americans. To accommodate this change, the church started Chinese and Hispanic services in 1988 and 1993, respectively. Although services are currently limited to these languages, St.George’s Church welcomes anyone interested in attending them.
