The Grand Concourse has a rich history and many noteworthy sites, so much so that the city declared the section of the Concourse from 153rd street to 167th street a landmark district in 2009.  Some of the protected buildings include:

the Andrew Freedman Home,

the Concourse Plaza Hotel (the fish building),

and the Bronx County Courthouse.

Landmarks play an important part in a neighborhood’s heritage and become a source of prestige.  They attract tourism and add to the value of the surrounding area.  They can also present a challenge to developers.  Buildings with landmark status cannot be demolished to make space for new construction, and the amount of modification allowed on them is very limited.  However, this has not deterred the entrepreneurs who have taken an interest in the Grand Concourse.  In June of 2014 for instance Youngwoo & Associates, LLC purchased the Bronx General Post Office (long designated a landmark).
