Saint Mary and Saint George Coptic Orthodox Church Staten Island

Saint Mary and Saint George church is one of the two churches on Staten Island. The church is located on 190 Main Street, 10307. As this picture illustrates that the church is filled with icons of the saints on both sides of the walls. Icons are know to be a general practice in the different branches of Orthodoxy. In addition one can see that there are two rows in the congregation, the left for the males and the right for the females. As one can also see that the women are wearing veils over their head to cover their hair, while the men don’t have anything on top of their head. This practice actually originates from the early Christian church. This practice orginates form the passage in the bible that talks about a woman’s long hair has a glory of hers and a man places something over his head as a glory to him (1 Corinthians 11). In other words when facing God during prayer a women must cover her hair, her glory, and a man can not place anything on his head to give God His full glory.
