After spending what felt like the longest 3 months of my life writing paper after paper, I remembered why I loved theater so much in high school. During high school, there wasn’t a week of school that went by without some sort of rehearsal or construction day for a performance. From my freshman year to when I graduated, I participated in every play and musical at our school either in cast or crew and I enjoyed every minute of it. Going to the Classic Stage Company performance reminded me why I love theater so much
Fiasco Theater’s production of Twelfth Night by Shakespeare showcased all the amazing things a strong theater group can accomplish. From the creative set design to the phenomenally funny acting, Fiasco theater was incredible in every aspect of the show. When I was watching the show I could see the amount of care and effort put in to every part of the show. During the scene where Malvolio was in the dungeon, they used the shadows of the railings in the loft in order to create the bars of the prison.
The directors of the show created the music to fit the time they set the show in. The actors playing the instruments was another really interesting part of the show. When I first saw the instruments on the side of the stafe I thought that a band would come in and play during the performance but they found a way to use the band during the show and incorporate the instruments into the show with the actors playing them. It made the show feel more real when all of the music fit in with the show rather than people breaking out into song without any context.
My biggest take away from watching the performance was the amazing energy of everyone involved. It seemed like the actors enjoyed watching the performances as much as the audience did. That kind of love for performing is something I hope to achieve during college.

As I watched the dungeon scene I didn’t even notice that the shadows of the balcony were used as prison bars. I guess there’s some things you don’t notice the first time around, which is a good reason people go see shows multiple times. I also agree that all the actors were so energized and passionate and genuinely loved being an actor, I hope it is something you do get to achieve as you grow as an actor!
