Gwen Stefani – What You Waiting For?

January 14th, 2010

Stefani’s video for her single “What You Waiting For?” is a tribute of sorts to the world of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. In the beginning, she is suffering from writer’s block and is in need of inspiration. She’s transported into a fantasy world after throwing a watch at a toy rabbit, making her fall back on her chair and left in a semi-conscious state. In the video, she plays various characters (including Alice and the Red Queen) and portrays different scenes from the stories (an overgrown Alice stuck in a house, the Mad Tea Party, the meeting with the hookah-smoking caterpillar). At the end of the video, her confidence has returned and, with her song written, she sings for her posse of Harajuku girls.

Gym Class Heroes – The Queen & I

January 14th, 2010

“The Queen and I” is about the lead singer of Gym Class Heroes (Travis McCoy) falling in love with an alcoholic, who he refers to as “the Queen”. The band decided to play up the fairytale aspect of the song by centering the music video’s story on the queen’s search for a king. Many people seek her hand (including a jester, knight, wizard, and other fairytale figures), but fail. She’s often seen throwing food at the men, most likely in reference to the hot-headed Queen of Hearts from Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. In the end, McCoy is unsuccessful as well until he trips, making the Queen laugh. She runs after him but he disappears, leaving his jacket and toothbrush in his wake. She is last seen with a scowl on her face and lives “unhappily ever after”.

Die Prinzen – Küssen Verboten

January 14th, 2010

“Kussen Verboten” is a German song and a parody of the popular fairy tale The Princess and the Frog and The Frog King, or Iron Heinrich, the tale we read in class. The humor centers on the frog and his motto of: kissing is not allowed. The music video depicts the message by displaying the frog on what it appears to be a traffic sign, with the statement of “Kussen Verboten” underneath. Although enjoyed by most audiences, the song, based on the translated lyrics, discusses the plight of a young boy who considers kissing to be “icky”. The last part of the song describes the boy waking up frightened in the middle of the night, because of a dream where lips are about to kiss him. The catchy chorus is enjoyed by all audiences, young or old.
