Debbie Reynolds & Fashion

Deborah Nadoolman Landis’ book “Hollywood Costume” was first brought to my attention when doing research for my term paper.  The preface to this book was written by Debbie Reynolds.  In it, she talks about the “magic of costumes” and why she is interested in fashion and costume design.  She is an avid collector of fashion, Hollywood costumes, and movie memorabilia in general.  Reynolds also wrote a chapter of the book titled “Actress and Collector” describing how she got interested in and started collecting Hollywood movie memorabilia, specifically costumes.  She displayed a large portion of her collection at her hotel in Las Vegas.  She lost the hotel and needed to find a home for her collection.  She wanted to build a museum for it, but that fell through.  She even offered her collection to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for display at their proposed museum, but they turned her down.  She couldn’t find a home for her collection, so it was displayed at the Paley Media Center and then auctioned off.

Below are some of the costumes that Debbie Reynolds auctioned off.

Ruby Slippers from The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Tunic from Ben Hur (1959)

Oliver Hardy’s Jacket from The Big Noise (1944).

Vivien Leigh’s hat (along with 5 others) from Gone With the Wind (1939).

Harpo Marx’s signature wig and hat.

Charlie Chaplin’s signature bowler hat.

Jim Carrey’s Santa outfit from How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000).
