Community Board 7 

 

Overview:

Community Board 7 is the largest in population and 5th largest in size of all Community Boards. It represents Bay Terrance, Beechhurst, College Point, Flushing, Malba, Queensborough Hill, and Whitestone. It covers 12.7 square miles and 285 miles of city streets. It contains 64 park locations and 30 Greenstreets, and serves as a transportation hub with 24 bus lines, #7 train, and L.I.R.R. The community board is focusing on issues include zoning, parking, transportation, traffic congestion, waterfront development, and the maintaining of business growth. 1

 

Economic Development:

The Community Board tries to expand the economic activity in Downtown Flushing. It notices problems relating to parking, traffic congestion, and infrastructure limits that affect sanitation, safety, and the economic development. Especially with the opening of Citi Field and the redevelopment of Willets Point that enlarged the problems. To solve the problem, the board is asking for the expansion parking capabilities with new projects and improve #7 subway line. [1]

 

Environmental Protection:

The district has been troubled by problems of flooding. It is suggesting for new funding to design and construct storm sewers, sanitary sewers, combined sewers, catch basins, and sewer regulator. It is also promoting the multi-language education on the control of storm water.[1]

 

Housing Preservation

Illegal rooming houses and illegal apartments is increasing in the area due to the shortage of inspectors. Apartments are being subdivided illegally in order to have additional families in the apartment. It suggests a stricter law policy to prohibit this to occur and the prohibition be part of the lease when signed by occupants.[1]

It also realize the growing amount of seniors, and suggests for increase of programs for Senior Citizen homeowners to please the increase of demand.

 

Sanitation

Liter has been a major problem in downtown Flushing. The Community Board suggests multi-language educational programs to explain sanitation laws to citizens and business in the district. It also ask enforcement to be more fair and reasonable, such as ticketing those that litter. [1]

The Community Board also supports recycling programs and education efforts toward recycling. It encourages targeting new materials for recycling, such as  textiles and cooking oil.

Increase of the amount of trucking of snow in the congested area is also suggested for better snow removal.

 

Traffic

Linden Place should have an ancillary road to relieve traffics on the Whitestone Expressway. Faded signs and street markings are to be reported and updated to improve on public safety and reduce traffic congestion. Increase of parking space is also needed to relieve traffic on the street of Flushing. [1]

Main Street subway station is the 12th largest subway in the city and biggest transfer point for buses and subways. The Community Board suggests the #7 line to extend further east into Flushing to levitate traffic congestion in Flushing.

 

Youth

Community Board #7 has been missing a Youth Coordinator due to budget cuts since 1995. His job is to guide youth program users, provide assistance to youth service, and monitor youth program. The board needs a youth coordinator to ensure the quality of the youth service program that can improve stability of the community. [1]
