The park is divided into seven zones:
1. Marina
2. Sports Center
3. West Park
4. Recreation and Garden Botanical Area
5. Historic World’s Fair Core Area
6. Meadow Lake
7. Willow Lake
Part of the park’s appeal is its versatility, since it has many different areas that offer various activities. The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation has noted that the park has three major modes. Mode refers to the way in which the park as a whole can be used. It can be viewed as a neighborhood park, where local children play or where nearby residents can picnic or exercise. It can also be viewed as a regional park, because people who do not necessarily live nearby come for various reasons, whether to ice skate, visit Citi Field, or for other reasons. Lastly, the park can be viewed as a large event space since many concerts, festivals, and other activities take place here, especially during the summer.
The park is also appealing because of its accessibility. Not only is it conveniently located near several bus routes and major roads, but its large size allows it to span several neighborhoods. These neighborhoods include Flushing, Queensboro Hill, Kew Gardens Hills, Forest Hills, Corona, and North Corona. Since it is surrounded by many neighborhoods, it attracts people from a wide range of backgrounds.
