Ridgewood Savings Bank (Start of Tour)
Ridgewood Savings Bank

Right near the entrance to the Subway and next to a major bus route we find Ridgewood Savings Bank.  This branch of Ridgewood Savings Bank was opened in 1940, twenty years after a group of fourteen local Ridgewood residents got together with the idea of forming a new mutual savings institution to serve the people of their community1.  Just a little of history for the beginning of our tour!!  From here  follow this street to the corner of Queens Boulevard and Continental and you should see the bank that has some "real" history.

Austin Street

Austin Street is the best place in Forest Hills to find all kinds of different cuisines, shops, and stores!  Here is a more open part of the tour where you can go and explore a bit to discover the diversity of Forest Hills.  When you feel that you have explored enough find your way back to 71st Avenue/Continental and go under the bridge to find yourself in Station Square.

Station Square

Station Square is one of the most important stops on our tour because it is your first glimpse of Forest Hills Gardens, the suburban side of Forest Hills.  Unlike its urban counterpart on the other side of the Long Island Railroad tracks, this Forest Hills suburb is home to many wealthy people and is filled with Tudor and Colonial style real estate all within walking distance from this major transportation line that brings many commuters to the heart of Manhattan or Long Island and back every single day.  Station Square is a main stop on the Long Island Railroad and it contains many shops, stores, and even a hotel!  To read more about its importance to the history of Forest Hills visit our Station Square page.  After admiring the beautiful architecture head on down Greenway Terrace to find a small park nestled in between a church and an apartment building.

Greenway Circle

Here in Greenway Circle take a few minutes and stroll around the center of the small field to discover that there is actually a mast in the center not a flagpole.  This mast was taken from the racing yacht, Columbia, which won the America's Cup races in 1899 and 19012.  Near the mast you can see an apartment building, 150 Greenway Terrace, that overlooks the whole circle.  An ideal location for purchasing real estate especially for young families because of our next stop.  Find your way behind the apartment building where there is a Public School.

P.S.101Q 'The School In the Gardens'

Public School 101Q is ranked as one of the best Public Schools in New York State.  With a student-teacher ratio of 16.6 in 2012, this school is perfect for families just starting out for children looking to attend any grade from Pre-K to Fifth3. Not to mention it is over 100 years old!!  After admiring the beautiful architecture of Greenway Terrace follow Slocum Crescent onto Exeter and then make a right onto Tennis Plane to find yourself at the West Side Tennis Club!

West Side Tennis Club (End of Tour)

Here we end the tour by giving you a glimpse of old Forest Hills.  Still operating as a Tennis Club from 1912, this major sports center used to host the U.S Open and have regular concerts, including the Beatles and Forest Hills natives Simon and Garfunkel!  This club is central to the question of diversity in Forest Hills.  Go to The West Side Tennis Club to discover more about its history.  Only members are allowed in the club; however, you can ask to view the hallway near the front desk and here you can find plaques of winning tennis players, as well as, a slew of artifacts associated with the historical prominence of the site back in its heyday.  Thank you for taking our tour!! We hoped you enjoyed Forest Hills as much as we enjoyed researching it!!  Click here to go back to the home page
